Guest Speaker: Cell Phones in New Guinea
What happens when a $70 cell phone becomes available to the Bushmen of Papua New Guinea? It has a huge impact, changing the mode of communication in a more traditional subsistence based society where formerly all communication was face-to-face : marriage, warfare, witchcraft, children, as well as facilitating the transfer of funds. Our Guest Speaker today is Professor Polly Wiessner Links to an external site., from the UofU Dept. of Anthropology. Prof. Wiessner's research is on exactly this topic, and she'll be sharing her experiences with us.
