Cellular Coverage
(and Guest Speaker on coverage for the Navajo Nation)
Mobile communication systems are divided into cells, where frequencies are re-used. As a mobile user moves around, calls are transferred from one cell to another (and sometimes dropped in the transfer). Cell coverage requires a base station for each cell, and the investment in building one is substantial. Base station investments are usually prioritized where there are more users (urban areas) and where users are more likely to buy more expensive services (more affluent areas). Today we'll learn about the technology and talk about the ethical implications of cell coverage and its business model.
Today we'll also have a Guest Speaker ECE Prof. Mostafa Ardakani Links to an external site., who will talk about the challenges of coverage on the Navajo Nation.
