Digital and Video Image Processing

There are many different ways we manipulate and change images (stills or videos). Today we have easy access to filter images, Photoshop them (is photoshop a verb?), use AI for facial recognition or creating deep fakes, and more. Manipulation means two things here: technical manipulation meaning altering or editing, but also trying to manipulate people, their emotions and behaviors, using images or video.

Integrity /truthfulness of digital data. What is a true record of events any more? How do you as a modern person now navigate truth / fakes in terms of text, audio, photos, videos?

Convergence of big data, smartphones, cloud computing, data centers, environment and energy, AI...where are we today and where will we be tomorrow?

Learning Objectives

Learn about OLED displays (toughened glass, Organic LEDs, touchscreen)
Learn how digital compression works - JPEG example
Discuss and research real world uses of image editing - both good and bad
AI enhanced editing on phones edit out strangers from photos, etc)
Cloud computing, big data, international and environmental
AI generated images, text, video - where are we headed

- Select one image processing tool, and find out more about it. Share out to the class. Include information on any concerns or dilemmas you encounter.
- As a class, let's discuss this technology and see where we might predict the future heading....
