We usually count 5 senses for humans, touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight. These are the main modes we use to take in data from the outside world as information. Similarly, a smartphone has a number of different sensors and sensing modes that enable it to take in data from the outside world. We will start exploring these today. Beyond the basic raw information, we'll discuss how more complex functions emerge when sensors are merged with computation, both in us and in smartphones.
Learning Objectives
Enumerate sensors on modern smartphones
Figure out how they work and explain to the rest of the class
Learn about different modes of using some of the sensors -
Break up into small groups, research a sensor and how it works, make a short (about 3 minute) power point on this sensor and how it works. Share it with the class at the end of the day.
Upload your group PPTs on sensors and their use in smartphones
Review your own privacy settings on your phone, and see if they are set in ways you are comfortable with. Describe how you decide on the tradeoffs between privacy and functionality created by sharing your information.
