Attend Lab 1: Transmission Line Parameters
- Due No Due Date
- Points 100
Introduction
Pre-Lab: Please complete the pre-lab assignments each week before coming to the lab.
Lab attendance: Lab attendance is required this week in order to complete the measurements. If you are unable to attend your lab due to illness, please contact your TA and arrange a later date to complete this lab.
No lab next week: Next week, there is no in person lab, and you can use that time to write your report.
What is due: The report for this lab is due before your next lab.
PRE-Lab
Download Files for Lab 1
Please download the following files and bring them with you to the lab (preferably on your laptop).
- Lab 1 Handout
Download Lab 1 Handout
Download here . Please take a moment to read it over the lab and supporting materials below.
- What will you turn in? Tables 1,2,3 from the handout and any notes you find relevant. A formal report is not required.
- Bring your DVM (to measure resistance) and wire cutters/needle nose pliers
- RG-174A/U Datasheet Links to an external site.
Pre-Lab Tutorials
NOTE: This week you will be doing both measurements and Matlab calculations for RLGC, Zin, reflection coefficient, etc. The measurements are Part 3 of the lab. This is the only part that needs to be done in person. If you can't come to the lab this week, please do the Matlab parts at home. You can do the Matlab parts either before the lab or afterwards.
Supporting Material
- Matlab code examples:
- Find RLGC for a coax (Example Module 2.2 from textbook): TL_RLGC_module22_example.m Download TL_RLGC_module22_example.m
- Find Zin from RLGC, ZL, length (example 2.7 from textbook) TL_ZIN_example2_7.m Download TL_ZIN_example2_7.m
- Making Figures in Matlab Matlab Plotting
- Material constants (er, sigma, etc.) See Appendix B of textbook.
- Transmission line equations (from textbook) Table 2-1 and 2-2.docx Download Table 2-1 and 2-2.docx
TURN IN
- Attendance is required. 100 points will be given for your attendance.
- Turn in Tables 1,2,3 Download Tables 1,2,3 and Plots 1 and 2 as noted in the Lab Handout. Download Lab Handout.
- You may either use the handout as a template for your write-up (just fill in the tables and plots), or put them in a separate document of your choosing. This week, grading emphasis is on data (getting the results) and data display (good quality Matlab plots). See Matlab Plotting
- Also turn in your Matlab code(s).
