In the MyIDP portal, you took a self-assessment for skills, interests, and values. These assessments are specific to career paths as a scientist. In this assignment we're going to take a look at which career paths offer the best fit.
Step 1: Log into the MyIDP website: https://myidp.sciencecareers.org/ Links to an external site.
Step 2: On the left hand side of your screen, look for the "Career Exploration" heading in red. Click on "Consider Career Fit." Read the "Quick Tips" page to understand how you have been matched to particular scientific career paths.
Step 3: Click on the "My Career Path Matches" tab to see the scientific career paths that are good matches for you based on your skills and interests.
Step 4: Under the "Career Exploration" heading in red, click on "Read About Careers." Read the "Quick Tips" as well as "Resources."
Step 5: Read more about two different career paths that interest you.
Upload a brief reflection in which you respond to the following questions:
- What are your top three matches with respect to skills? Does this path require you to excel in skills you don't have now? Can you sufficiently improve in these areas? How?
- What are your top three matches with respect to interests? What tasks do you enjoy that this career doesn't require? Are there tasks on your list that you want to avoid, yet are required by this career path?
- Can your top career paths provide you with all of the most important outcomes and rewards included in your values list? If not, which values can not typically be met by this career.
- Identify two sources that you used to read more about two different career paths. Note: The IDP website provides links to articles, books, and professional societies, however, you can also do your own search for information. All you need to do is provide the citation or even a link to the article or professional association website.
