- Your overall objective this week is to identify a list of people you'd like to talk with, and what you'd like to talk with each of them about. This list can be much larger than you can do in this class. For instance, it might include people to talk with the next time you attend a professional conference (virtually or in person).
- Also identify a few (<10) people you'd like to talk with during this semester. Think about including a variety of people ... peers, near-peers, other academics, industry engineers, people who might use your application (doctors, city planners, etc.), people who sell things similar to your application, etc. This assignment will apply to the research, career, and mentor development this week, so include all of those sorts of questions.
- Based on our class discussion this past week and the video presentation by Dr. Tao, start to develop at least 5 questions you would like to ask your mentor or other professional stakeholders. These questions are intended to help you learn more about your mentors experiences in the field, articulate research interests and identify important organizational, technical, and interpersonal skills you'd like to attain.
- Review the questions you identified in the Problem Identification portion of this module (weeks 1,2). Plan to ask or adapt these questions to validate the problem your are considering addressing for your research. Also be sure to discuss the urgency of the problem.
- Schedule a meeting with your faculty mentor to identify specific people to contact (especially your short list for this semester), discuss how these people should be contacted (your mentor may choose to do this for you for people in their network), and share your proposed questions and receive feedback on them. (Tip: Tailoring a set of questions can be a SMART goal for this semester).
- Share your list of contacts and questions with a peer or near-peer, and get their feedback as well.
