Semiconductors and Chips
We talked through how we can use a circuit like this to send digital information using FSK (Frequency Shift Key) encoding - one tone means 0, the higher pitch sound means 1.
So how do we really build circuits and systems that do this for real in smartphones and wifi hubs, etc?
Semiconductors are the key technology - materials and electrical engineers have developed ways of making circuits out of materials like silicon and other semiconductors.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about semiconductor materials and how they are fabricated into integrated circuit chips
Do this before Class
NOTE: We will provide a number of online resources, some of which may be corporate sites that are advertising services or products. Using these sites as our references should IN NO WAY imply that we are promoting these companies. In some cases, we will even provide conflicting or debatable sites for the purpose of generating thought and discussion.
In Class Activities
-
- What is a semiconductor?
- What is an integrated circuit?
- How are integrated circuits made in fabs? Links to an external site.
What to Submit
- short response for what you learned from videos and class
