Writing 2010-004: Writing and Rhetorics in Place
Course Description
Writing 2010-004 is a Rigorous Seven-Week Course. Commitment is Required.
Arrange Your Priorities and Plan Your Schedule Accordingly.
All writing in undergraduate academic contexts works to prepare students for the kinds of reading, writing, and research they will do as members of an academic community. Undergraduate writing courses begin with the assumption that joining an academic community means learning and adopting new literacies and new rhetorical practices arising from on-going scholarly conversations and arguments.
In the case of Writing and Rhetorics in Place, learning will be guided by place-based rhetorics. Place is central to who we are, what we experience, and how we gain and express knowledge. It influences how we communicate, or--for the purposes of our class--what and how we create "arguments." We practice place-based learning--both Indigenous and WesternEuropean--to create effective arguments that allow our places, our communities, to better thrive.
What this means in terms of our class is that you will practice analytical and persuasive arguments primarily focused on environmental issues (water, air, land) within specific rhetorical contexts and geographic locations. Your study of an environmental issue may include a correlating business, entertainment, or racialized area of study. You choose the focus. Just make sure the social issue relates to the environmental issue. The goal is to encourage beneficial action, the thriving we hope to see in particular places/communities, as we argue on our own or others' behalf.
Together, then, we will consider how "where we come from" and "where we choose to stay" influence our communicative responses and decisions. We will be thinking, writing, and experiencing how place influences our identities and our arguments.
Emphasis in this course is placed on persuasive, researched writing or "rhetorical argument." In service of such learning, you will practice writing to learn, textual analysis, writing from research, and collaborative writing. Principles and practices you learn in this course can be adjusted in the future to suit areas of interests as you continue your studies in the university and the workplace.
