Canvas Overview and Orientation
What Is Canvas?
Canvas is the where course content, grades, and communication will reside for this course. It is important that you become familiar with it!
You can access Canvas through utah.instructure.com or through the CIS Portal Links to an external site..
Canvas Student Orientation
If you are new to Canvas, review the Canvas Student Orientation (Links to an external site.) materials.
Technical Requirements
Device Requirements
To ensure you have access to the full course, you will need:
-
Computer: Reliable access to a computer (desktop or laptop)
- Use of a mobile device (tablet, smartphone, etc.) will not be sufficient to complete this course, as not all content is guaranteed to be compatible. Please ensure you have access to a computer to complete quizzes, assignments, and discussions.
-
Internet: An internet connection fast enough to stream videos online
- Students can choose to download lecture videos to be viewed offline, if instructors have enabled downloading of these videos. For instructions on how to do this, view Teaching & Learning Technologies' article on Downloading Video Lectures Links to an external site..
-
Webcam & Microphone:
- Utilize these for meeting with your instructor/TA via Zoom conferencing.
Browser Compatibility
Occasionally, browsers encounter problems with Canvas features because of updates and incompatibilities.
Teaching & Learning Technologies (Links to an external site.) recommends that you have the latest version of at least two of the following browsers installed:
- Download: Google Chrome Links to an external site. (Preferred)
- Download: Firefox Links to an external site.
As of 2019, Canvas does not support use of Internet Explorer.

Canvas and Time Zone Settings
Profile
At the beginning of each semester, it is recommended that you update your profile with a recent photo of yourself, your contact information, a short introduction to you and your background, and any relevant links you may like to include (LinkedIn, portfolio site, etc.). This allows your instructor, TA's, and other students to get to know you better!
For more information about how to update your profile, view the Canvas Community's page on Updating Your Canvas Profile Links to an external site..
Notifications
At the beginning of each semester, it is strongly recommended that you update your notification preferences to ensure you are receiving appropriate updates for each of your courses. This is important, as you may otherwise miss important updates on course content.
For more information about how to update your notification settings, view the Canvas Community's page on Changing Canvas Notification Preferences Links to an external site..
Time zone settings
To ensure you are viewing due dates and times correctly, as well as events in the calendar, set your student Canvas time zone to your current location. If you do not change your time zone, all due dates and times listed in Canvas default to Mountain Time (MT).
All times written throughout the course (e.g. office hours written in the syllabus) are in Mountain Time, unless stated otherwise.
For more information about how to update your settings, view the Canvas Community's page on Setting Time Zone Preferences Links to an external site..
