Getting help to solve an exam from anyone other than yourself, during the time the exam is "active" (when you are taking the exam), is cheating. Students caught cheating will be given a 0 on this exam the first time, and an F in the class on the second incident.

=========================

This semester, we have a combination of virtual and in-person students. All students may choose whether they'd like to take the exam in person or virtually, regardless of which section of the class they are enrolled in.

  • In person exams will be held in the same room as we normally meet.
  • In person exams may also be taken in the UofU Testing Center, if prior arrangements are made with the instructor.
  • Virtual exams will be taken at the same time as the in person exams, via Zoom. You will need a video webcam, and sufficient internet to leave it on throughout the whole exam.

What can I use on the exam? Anything on PAPER..Due to the nature of easy collaboration on the internet, exams must be taken on paper, and any notes you use must be printed out on paper. You may use:

Questions of the Day: The best way to approach the exam is to use your Question of the Day notes or an even more condensed set of notes (a cheat sheet) you have created before the exam.  Having information condensed in one place will save you a lot of time on the exam and will help you learn the material.  It is best to have quickly accessible information during the exam.

You may use pencil / pen / markers / colored pencils, paper, Cookbooks, Circuit System Design cards, your Question of the Day (QOD) and any of your own notes are allowed here, printed textbook sections, In-Class problems, homework and handouts, and calculator.  Basically, you can have all of your notes but  NO COMPUTER (sorry, if you are using a tablet, you'll need to print your notes out for the exams), NO CELLPHONES, NO DEVICES That COMMUNICATE WIRELESSLY.

What is on the exam?  See Exam Reviews at the end of each Module in Canvas for links to old courses with exams and solutions.  The most recent exams given by your instructor are very good examples of the types of problems you will see on the exams.

Is the exam tricky?  My goal with the exam is I tell you what I want you to learn, you learn it and show me on the exam, and I give you the grade to show it.  I try very hard NOT to write tricky exams.  That said, the problems can't be identical to the homework, and under exam pressure, they may feel trickier than they really are.  Step back, take a deep breath, and remember that you have studied and that these problems are similar to what you have solved in the homework and the practice exam.  Be sure you show as much work as possible and list relevant concepts for each problem.  Partial credit on exams is essential in this course.

How long is the exam?  Midterms will be given for the full class period: 1045-12:05. However, it is impossible to write a leisurely electrical engineering exam.  You will need to understand the material well enough to move through it fairly quickly.

Need Extra Time on Exams? Note also that you can contact Disability Services Links to an external site. if you think you require extra time on exams. Please do this well in advance of exams, as this assessment requires several appointments and time.This applies to this class, and all of your other classes going forward.

What if I get a bad grade on the exam?  Remember the final exam can completely replace the midterm scores.  See grading information in the syllabus.

What if I get good grades on the exams? Celebrate!  and don't take the final!  See grading information in the syllabus.
