Course: Homework, Questions of the Day (nitty gritty details)
HomeWork (HW):
- Where do I find the homework? Homework is accessed by links in the schedule table on the Home page (click on Home in the left column of the Canvas page to get to the Home page). There are columns with links to lectures, homework, labs, and extra credit. Click on the homework links to get to the homework descriptions. You can also find the homework in the Canvas files by clicking on Files in the left column of the Canvas page. You can navigate through the files to find what you are looking for.
- What will be in the homework (what am I supposed to turn in)? Homework includes several problems related to the Questions of the Day. (For example HW 2-1 )
- What are the Questions of the Day (QoD)? Each day there will be a question(s) associated with the lecture. The question might be "How do you calculate the voltage and current in a multi-resistor network?", which you should answer in your own words. The instructions (typically half a page or so) should be written by YOU so YOU can understand them, and they should include all necessary equations, constants, tables, etc. Yes, you can include any notes that are useful to you for each QOD but you are limited to both sides of one 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. You do not have to turn in the QOD's. They are for your use (including exams).
- When will it be assigned? Homework and QOD's will be assigned daily.
- When Should I do it? To learn the material most efficiently, attempt the homework before we discuss it in class, and finish it before the next day of class.
- When Is it Due? Most homework is due on Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. the week after it is assigned, but it is not advisable to wait until the last day to work on your homework. Do it each day before the next class, and bring questions to class if needed. Due Dates are posted on each assignment and can be viewed in Canvas in the Assignments section or on the Calendar. QOD's should be answered on the day of the class session that covers the corresponding material but after class, so you can clean them up. Again, it does not have to be turned in.
- How do I turn it in? All assignments will be turned in to Canvas online as pdf files. See instructions in Syllabus on Canvas.
- How will it be graded? Homework will be checked (graded) for completeness only, and the homework solutions will be available online. (For example HW 2-1 ) Sure, you can just copy them. BUT that is a very poor way to learn, and learning is what I am after. Your goal is to learn the material, and the homework is a tool to do that. If you need to look at the solutions to complete the homework, then do it. But look at some of the 'similar problems' solutions as well, until you no longer need to look at the solutions to complete the work.
- You Mean I can use all of my QODs on the Exam?! Yep, that's right. You can use anything you have written in the QODs as well as other resources, such as cookbooks, as specified in class, on the exam. Exams will be open QOD notes, open specified resources, but closed book, so include everything in your QOD that you need to solve the problems. You may include tables and figures copied from the text, but please don't copy the text itself. Questions of the Day will be checked (graded) for completeness only. You are responsible for making sure your notes on the QOD are correct and that you can understand them.
- How do I get my Homework back? You will always have your homework, since you are scanning it and turning in via a scan file. You can access your submission on Canvas to see the comments left by the grader.
- When Will I get my homework grades? All homework, exams, labs should be graded within one week of when they were turned in (not counting holidays/breaks). If they are not, please contact the instructor.
- How Can I See My Grades? Login to your U of U computer account and then click on Grades in the left column of the Canvas page.
- How Can I get help on my homework? I will have office hours via Zoom, and the hours will be decided after the doodle polls result. Methods of contacting me are listed in the Syllabus. Each lab TA will have an office hour during the week. I will add those times to the syllabus page when they are available.
- Extra Credit: Extra Credit can be used to improve your grade. You can find extra credit throughout the semester on the class website.
