These lemon volcanoes will put a fun twist on the famous volcano science project!

Supplies:

  • 2 lemons
  • Baking Soda
  • Food coloring
  • Skewer
  • Dish soap
  • Tray
  • Spoon
  • Cup
  • Knife

Written Instructions (Printable PDF) 

  1. Slice the end off of one of your lemons so it sits flat on the tray
  2. Flip the lemon over and slice the core out but not completely
  3. Slice your second lemon in half and juice the lemon into a cup and set it aside  Use your skewer to mash up the inside of your cored lemon to get some of the juice to come up
  4. Drop in some food coloring
  5. Squeeze in some dish soap
  6. Add a spoonful of baking soda into your lemon
  7. Pour in a very small amount of your reserved lemon juice and use the skewer to stir
  8. The lemon will begin to fizz and bubble
  9. If you want the reaction to continue, alternate in adding the baking soda, coloring, dish soap, and lemon juice
