Create a groovy lava lamp with items you have around your house!

Length of Activity: 10-15 Minutes 

Supplies:

  • Glass or small 8oz water bottle
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (color(s) of your choice)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets

Written Instructions (Printable PDF)

  1. Fill your glass bottle ¾ full with oil and the rest almost to the top with water.
  2. Add a few drops (6-8 or more depending on your bottle size) of food coloring.
  3. Add your Alka-Seltzer tablet and watch the lava lamp form. You can also experiment with dividing the tablet into smaller pieces (2, 4, etc) and adding them in sequence to observe the effects on your lamp.
