Instructions

The purpose of this activity is to show you how to do multiple different stitches so you can create your own embroidery design!

Supplies:

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Cotton fabric without pattern
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery thread (any color)

To get your thread started, cut it, and tie a knot on one end. For the straight stitch and the back stitch, you will need to separate the strands in your thread. There are 6 strands in thread, you need three.

For the straight stitch:

  1. To practice, draw a straight line on your fabric.
  2. Push the needle through the fabric at the one end of your line.
  3. Push the needle back through following the line.
  4. Keep doing this until you reach the end of your line.
  5. Push the needle through the fabric and tie off.

For the back stitch:

  1. To practice, draw a straight line on your fabric.
  2. Push the needle through the line and start a little bit above where the line ends.
  3. Push the needle in the opposite direction of the straight stitch (so through the end of the line).
  4. Keep doing this until you reach the end of your line.
  5. Push the needle through the fabric and tie off.

For the lazy daisy stitch:

  1. Push the needle through the fabric.
  2. Push the needle back in close to where the needle went through the first time.
  3. Pull the needle and leave the loop that forms.
  4. Push your needle through the loop.
  5. Then push the needle back through the fabric on the opposite side of the loop to make it flat on the fabric.
  6. Tie off yarn.

For the French knot stitch:

  1. Push the needle through the fabric.
  2. Before pushing the needle back through the fabric, wrap the yarn around the needle 2-3 times.
  3. Pull tight.
  4. Push the needle back through the fabric close to where is went through the first time.
  5. Tie off yarn.

For the rose stitch:

  1. Create three French knot stitches.
  2. Make 5 straight stitches around the French knot stitches.
  3. Weave your yarn and needle through the lines.
  4. Once the rose is filled push the needle back through the fabric.
  5. Tie off the yarn.
