This assignment is meant to be something fun and interesting to do with your family or friends over the holiday. I listed it as 'due' today, so it would show up on your calendar. This assignment will be accepted through the last day of class. BUT please bring the 'questions' you receive in part (3) to class with you on Monday. There will be a prize for the most questions received.
1) Read one of the GROUPS of articles listed below . You don't need to read every word. Scan if needed, particularly on the longer articles.
Which group of articles did you read? (5 points)
2) Prepare a 3 minute presentation (just verbal, no slides required) about some aspect of EM safety and how it impacts society. Take a “stand” on an issue and defend it. Use the material you read (or anything else you wish … more information can be found: HERE Links to an external site. ) Information on impromptu speaking is HERE Links to an external site..
What 2-3 main points did you cover? (3 points)
2) Give your presentation at least once over the Thanksgiving Break to an audience (of at least one person) who is NONTECHNICAL. Family members, roommates, friends, or a person at the grocery store / library / union building are all OK. You can start your presentation with “You will never believe the crazy assignment we have to do over the break ….” if you want to ;)
Who was in your audience? (2 points)
3) Encourage your audience to ask questions, and write down the question(s) they ask. Answer them as best you can, but mostly I want you to collect the types of questions asked or issues raised by a nontechnical person. BRING your list of audience questions to class. The person with the MOST questions will receive a prize. To get the most questions, find a controversial person, get a large audience, or give the presentation several times to different audiences.
What questions did they ask? (bring this list to class in addition to turning it in) (5 points)
4) WRITE a half page answer to ‘How does an ‘average (non-technical) person’ view electromagnetics?’ (5 points)
5) EXTRA Credits . Find at least one person (son/daughter/brother/sister/niece/nephew/person on the bus) whom you think might like to be an engineer. Tell them about engineering. (Information here: http://www.coe.utah.edu/majors Links to an external site. )
Whom did you tell, and what was their response? (10 points)
