Course Description: This course is designed to introduce individuals to the fundamentals of creating game artwork from an industry perspective.  In  particular, students will  become familiar with  drawing and illustration techniques using Adobe Photoshop as well as traditional drawing, illustration and sculpting mediums.

 

Course Objectives: Students gain control of drawing, painting skills both within traditional mediums and digital. Craftsmanship and presentation skills. Understanding of basic design principles of Silhouette, World Building, Different Concept styles (example: Cartoon vs realism), Color theory, Generation of ideas and taking and giving constructive critique. Importance of iteration. Professional creative atmosphere. And more.

 

Attendance: It is very important that students attend all class as a lot of information will be given during class exercises and demos. If a class is missed it is the student's responsibility to get class information from their fellow students. Students are required to attend on time and stay the duration of the class. Showing up more than 20 minutes late to class counts as an absence. More than 5 absences will result in a reduced or failing grade.

Students are responsible for acquainting themselves with and satisfying the entire range of academic objectives and requirements as defined by the instructor. PPM, Policy 6-100III-O

Critiques: Critiques are an integral part of the learning process. Students will be required to participate in critiques of assignments in class with peer to peer feedback encouraged.

Homework: Date and time your contracted work must be completed is specified in each assignment description. Unless stated otherwise, you MAY NOT turn in homework late.

Academic Misconduct:

Students in the EAE program are bound by the University of Utah’s Academic Misconduct Policy which is outlined in the Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities (available here: https://regulations.utah.edu/academics/6-400.php (Links to an external site). As defined in this code, academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating, misrepresenting one's work, inappropriately collaborating, plagiarism, and fabrication or falsification of information. It also includes facilitating academic misconduct by intentionally helping or attempting to help another student to commit an act of academic misconduct. A primary example of academic misconduct would be submitting as one's own, work that is copied from an outside source.

Students who are found to have participated in academic misconduct in a class will be sanctioned with a failing grade for the the course. Students who are sanctioned a second time will not be allowed to take further EAE courses at the University of Utah. Further, students who are in the degree program will removed from the program.

We will be using Canvas for posting assignments and projects this semester. Assignments must be posted to the website before the class that they are due. Myself and the TA’s will be using the blog in tandem with Canvas to grade assignments and to give feedback.

 

 

  1. It is very important that you submit Canvas entries with your full name and assignment label, along with the proper file format.
    I’ll use Canvas for looking at your work for midterms and finals.
