Student Expectations

In this class, you are expected to:

  • Be self-motivated, organized, and willing to stay on top of your schedule. Take control of your learning.
  • Follow all official University of Utah policies regarding interpersonal conduct, academic honesty, and other rights and responsibilities outlined in the University of Utah Student Handbook and Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities. If you have any questions about this, please contact the Dean of Students.
  • Follow the Core Rules of Netiquette whenever you interact with others using course technology.
  • Log in to Canvas regularly and set your Canvas notification settings to ensure you receive timely course updates.
  • Contact the teaching assistant or me promptly with questions or if you need help understanding course materials. If you do not hear back within 3 days, please contact us again.

 

Instructor Expectations

I am an expert in the topics you will learn about this semester and will mentor you throughout the classroom experience, aided by the teaching assistant(s). I will:

  • Prepare lectures, learning materials, and assignments that give you opportunities to learn and practice course content.
  • Ensure that the course remains a safe space where students can engage with difficult content thoughtfully and respectfully.

Student Conduct in Class

The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities remains in place for all students whether a course is offered in person or online. The instructor’s intellectual property rights and the privacy of all course participants must not be violated by students at the Price College of Engineering. You may not share course materials with non-class members without my explicit written permission. Harassment or bullying of instructors and students, including via electronic media, the internet, social networks, blogs, cell phones, and text messages, will not be tolerated. If you are found responsible for such infractions, you will be subject to disciplinary sanctions.

You may not record any part of a class session without my express consent, unless approved as a disability accommodation. I may record course sessions but only for use by registered class members for instructional purposes.

You also have the right to fair treatment by your instructors. This right, and other important rights, are outlined in Section Two of “Policy 6-400: Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities (“Student Code”).” This can be accessed through the Dean of Students website.

Technology Responsibility Policy

It is your responsibility to hand in your work on time. When you do so, please double-check that it was submitted successfully.

I will check links before course content goes live at the start of the semester. Sometimes, though, links may break unexpectedly.

  • Student responsibilities: You are responsible for submitting all assignments correctly, and for reading and viewing all assigned readings, texts, videos, and web content. You are required to contact me any time you find a broken link. If you do not contact me, all links and content will be considered “active” and you will be expected to read, watch, download, or submit the linked resources. Your work will also be graded accordingly, and you cannot make up points on an assignment just because a link was broken.
  • Instructor responsibilities: I am committed to keeping links active in the course. Upon notification of a broken link, I will work as quickly as possible to repair it and will keep you updated.

Academic Misconduct

It is expected that students comply with University of Utah policies regarding academic honesty, including but not limited to refraining from cheating, plagiarizing, misrepresenting one’s work, and/or inappropriately collaborating. This includes the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools without citation, documentation, or authorization. Students are expected to adhere to the prescribed professional and ethical standards of the profession/discipline for which they are preparing. Any student who engages in academic dishonesty or who violates the professional and ethical standards for their profession/discipline may be subject to academic sanctions as per the University of Utah’s Student Code: Policy 6-410: Student Academic Performance, Academic Conduct, and Professional and Ethical Conduct.

Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on an individual assignment, and/or failure in the course. Academic misconduct, according to the University of Utah Student Code:

“...Includes, but is not limited to, cheating, misrepresenting one’s work, inappropriately collaborating, plagiarism, and fabrication or falsification of information…It also includes facilitating academic misconduct by intentionally helping or attempting to help another to commit an act of academic misconduct.”
