EAE 3680-001- Digital Painting

Course Description:

Focuses on creating high-quality digital paintings/illustrations in a studio setting.  Study the more subtle features of the software applications. Practice conceptual and problem solving skills as it relates to games, film & illustration.

 

Course Objectives:

-Students will focus on learning the software(Photoshop, Painter) to create images. 

-At the end of the course the students should have a broader view of the digital painting process and how it can be applied to their work.  

-Have a better understanding of the tools available in the digital realm.

-Take a painting from rough to final, analyzing each step along the way.

 

Structure:

The class structure will include lecture & assignment discussion on Monday, followed by critique and lab time. Students will be expected to start brainstorming and sketching in class, and finish rendering & completing assignments outside of class. Participation in-class critiques is encouraged. 

 

Attendance Policy:

-Students are required to attend on time and stay the duration of the class.  Showing up more than 20 minutes late to class counts as an absence.  More than 4 absences will result in a reduced or failing grade.

Grading:

Assignments will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

-Concept or Idea: Is it original and creative?(40%)

-Craftsmanship: Is it well thought out and executed in a compelling way?(40%)

-Technical: Are the underlying drawing & composition well-constructed?(20%)

 

Scale:

100-93=A         76-73=C

92-90=A-          72-70=C-

89-87=B+          69-67=D+

86-83=B            66-63=D 

82-80=B-           62-60=D-

79-77=C+         59-0 =E

 

Assignments:

-Submit assignments for critique via the Canvas section of Utah.edu 

-Assignments must be submitted by 6:00 PM Monday before class to be considered on-time.

-No late assignments will be accepted without a written note.

 

Plagiarism:

Nothing can damage an artist's reputation more than plagiarism. It is simply unacceptable to copy someone else's artwork and attempt to pass it off as your own.  During the course this includes artwork based on existing intellectual properties(i.e. “fan art”)
