Background:
You have been learning about Thevenin equivalent circuits in class. In this lab, you will measure them for yourself.
Overview:
In this lab you will:
- Build simple linear circuits consisting of v-sources and resistors.
- Measure the output voltage of the linear circuit with various load resistances.
- Find an equivalent Thevenin circuit consisting of a single voltage source and resistance that has the same output characteristics as the linear circuit.
- Design a voltage reference whose Thevenin equivalent matches given specifications.
Equipment List:
- MyDAQ board with cables. (You can hook them to the lab computers if you don’t want to bring your laptop.)
- Multisim software.
- From earlier Labs:
- Protoboard & wire kit
- Additional parts:
- Resistors: 100 kΩ (six)
Prelab (Do this before you come to lab)
- Review the videos and written material on Thevenin equivalents on the class website.
- Read through the lab, and (optional, you will be faster) run the Multisim simulations prior to coming to lab.
- Print out the Lab Handout
- Buy the parts needed from the ECE Stockroom.
Instructions & Reference Material:
- Remember : To get your MyDAQ started, look for the NI Instrument Launcher on your computer (you may want to use the 'search' box to do this easily).
- MyDAQ and Multisim resources (see LAB page)

What is Due When? Answer the questions in the handout. This is due at the start of your NEXT lab (Lab 6). OK to hand in either in hardcopy to your TA or homework box or electronically.
