ATSM 6150 Introduction to Taping and Bracing

Course Description : 

This course is designed to teach students to select, apply, evaluate, and modify appropriate standard protective equipment, taping, wrapping, bracing, padding, and other custom devices for the client/patient to prevent and/or minimize the risk of injury to the head, torso, spine, and extremities for safe participation in sport or other physical activity.

CAATE Curricular Standards

Standard 78 Select, fabricate, and/or customize prophylactic, assistive, and restrictive devices, materials, and techniques for incorporation into the plan of care

Standard 86 Select, fit, and remove protective equipment to minimize the risk of injury or re-injury.

All curricular content in the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program must meet curricular standards set forth in part by The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).  The learning objectives in this syllabus are specifically mapped to accreditation requirements, which can be found here.

Goals & Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate appropriate taping procedures for prophylactic and injury purposes

  • Demonstrate proper selection and fitting of protective equipment to minimize the risk of injury or re-injury

Evaluation

Teaching and Learning Methods

This course is designed to provide you with hands-on clinical skills. Thus, the course is clinical laboratory-based with experiential learning. It will include asynchronous online content delivery with asynchronous online content and in-person lab-intensive session(s).

Course Policies

Submitting Assignments

All assignments, unless otherwise announced, must be submitted to the designated area of Canvas. Do not submit assignments via email.

  • All assignments and projects will use AMA formatting. 

Late Assignments

Students should submit all work before the specified deadline. Assignments may be submitted up to 24 hours late (past the posted due date and time) for up to 70% credit. For example, if the late assignment submitted within 24 hours earned a score of 90 out of 100 possible points, the student would be awarded a score of 63. Any assignments or work submitted after the 24-hour time window will not be accepted and the student will receive a score of 0 for that assignment. Exceptions may be made before the due date or during extenuating circumstances.

Grading

The AT program seeks to provide feedback as students become entry-level clinicians. Letter grades provide a course evaluation method, but all students should seek to improve their clinical knowledge through feedback. For this course, letter grades will be assigned using the following grading scale:

Grading Policy

Per MAT policies, you must earn a C or higher to pass this class. Per the graduate school policy, you will be placed on academic probation if your cumulative GPA is less than 3.00. Please see the handbook for more details. Percentages for grade calculations will not be rounded.

Though the online format allows students greater flexibility to complete their work, this course does have a structure and timeline! As such, the following is expected of all students in this class:

  • Students must be self-motivated, organized, and willing to stay on top of their schedules. Students should take control of their learning while in this course.
  • Students are expected to follow the Core Rules of Netiquette at all times while participating in the class and communicating with others.
  • Students will log in to the course a minimum of 3 times per week.
  • Students are not expected to interact with their classmates in person. Students may be expected to work with classmates via online communication options like Canvas Discussions, video conferencing, or other communication technologies of choice (Groupme, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, etc).
  • Students will regularly check for course updates and will update their Canvas notification settings to ensure they receive timely notifications from the course.
  • Students will contact their instructor or teaching assistant in a timely manner if they have any questions, are struggling with course materials, or need further assistance from their instructor.
    • If you do not hear back within 3 days after sending a message, please contact your instructor/TA again.
