Week 8 Overview

WEEK 8: feb 24 - mar 2

Overview

This week we will take a close look at one particular star: our Sun!

By the end of this week, you should be able to:

  • describe the balance between the forces that determine the structure of the Sun.
  • explain how mass is converted into energy in the Sun's core and why fusion happens only in the core and not in the outer layers.
  • list the different ways that energy moves outward from the Sun's core toward its surface.
  • sketch a model of the Sun's interior and atmospheric layers and describe important characteristics of each.
  • describe the solar activity cycles of 11 and 22 years, and explain how solar activity affects Earth.

Make sure that you complete the following:

  • Attend lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:10am (JFB 101)
  • Complete Reading and Reading quizzes before lectures (listed in Activities below)
