Week 8 Overview
Overview
This week we will take a close look at one particular star: our Sun!
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
- describe the balance between the forces that determine the structure of the Sun.
- explain how mass is converted into energy in the Sun's core and why fusion happens only in the core and not in the outer layers.
- list the different ways that energy moves outward from the Sun's core toward its surface.
- sketch a model of the Sun's interior and atmospheric layers and describe important characteristics of each.
- describe the solar activity cycles of 11 and 22 years, and explain how solar activity affects Earth.
Make sure that you complete the following:
- Attend lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:10am (JFB 101)
- Complete Reading and Reading quizzes before lectures (listed in Activities below)
- Complete the homework assignment (listed in Activities below).
