Week 7 Overview
Overview
This week we will focus on how we can measure and relate different properties of stars, such as distances, temperatures, compositions, sizes, and masses.
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
- describe how we find distances to nearby stars.
- explain the relationship among the distance, brightness, and luminosity of a star.
- explain the relationship between the temperature and the color of a star.
- describe how we find the compositions of stellar atmospheres.
- explain how we find sizes and masses of stars.
- read and plot the locations of stars on an H-R diagram.
Make sure that you complete the following:
- Attend lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:10am (JFB 101).
- Complete reading and reading quizzes before lectures (listed in Activities below).
- Complete the homework assignment (listed in Activities below).
- Answer the Mid Semester Feedback Survey for 5 points extra credit (listed in Activities below).
