Week 11: Leadership

Week 11 Leadership

Introduction & Expectations

This week we'll be focusing on important aspects of leadership.

You may be thinking, "but I'm not going to be leading anything in grad school." While it may be true that you won't be taking on a senior-level position in the hierarchy of an organization just yet, leadership isn't something that is only reserved for those of a certain pay grade or job title. You may already be a leader in your lab, family, place of worship, or community.

You may also be thinking, "but I don't have the personal attributes to be a leader, ever."  When we say the word "leader" many people think of a domineering, take-charge charismatic individual. But leadership isn't an adjective. We don't need extroverted, charismatic traits to practice leadership. And those with charisma don't automatically lead.

Leadership has been defined in many ways. I see leadership as a verb - something any of us can do.  Leadership is a process of social influence - not authority or power. Leadership is about maximizing the efforts of others towards the achievement of a goal. From this perspective, leadership skills reflect good group communication skills such as active listening, emotional intelligence, consensus building, goal setting, conflict resolution, assertiveness, and giving and receiving feedback.

Dr. AJ Metz will be the facilitator

INTRODUCTION

We'll start our leadership modules this week by learning more about active listening, emotional intelligence, assertiveness, and conflict resolution.  Of course you probably know a fair deal about these skills already. What I hope to do is help you reflect on them in a new way and think about these skills as you work with others. I've integrated content from the counseling and business worlds; in one of our Wednesday afternoon discussions, we'll talk about how they apply specifically to Electrical Engineering.

  • Reflect on your leadership skills in active listening, emotional intelligence, assertiveness, and conflict resolution. What are your strengths?  What are your growth edges?  Set a SMART goal for your growth in leadership - one thing that you can accomplish between now and the end of the semester with respect to implementing or practicing one of these skills.
