Peers can be individuals who have a lot of experience in your field or can be outsiders who do not have a lot of experience to your topic of interest. There are benefits to receiving feedback from both. For example, being able to describe and receive feedback on a research idea to an "outsider" is a great way to ensure your research is understandable to a wide range of audience members. Whereas, you might be able to receive technical feedback from someone "inside" your research area, you might get some fresh ideas from someone who is not immersed in your field. Further, it can be fruitful to talk with a student outside of your program on how to navigate interpersonal conflict with a research team member or mentor, offering new perspectives and strategies.
After meeting with a peer, please respond to the following questions:
- What was your main goals for this peer consultation?
- What did you learn?
- How will you use what you learned?
- What new questions have emerged since this peer consult?
- Any other reflections you want to share regarding this interaction?
