Lecture (L4-1) Op-Amp Characteristics

An operational amplifier (op amp) is one of the most widely-used components in electrical engineering. Op amps can be built into circuits to amplify/de-amplify, compare, add, subtract, multiply (that's amplify), and divide (that's deamplify) a voltage. In this lecture, we will focus on op amps that do NOT have feedback (there is no external connection between the input and output. This makes the op amp act like a comparator or a switch. It's ideal for sensor circuits.

Questions of the Day (Learning Objectives)
- What is an Op-Amp?
- What is the linear range of the op-amp?
- What is the difference between the op-amp gain (A) and circuit gain (G)?
- How is an op-amp used as a switch? (what values can it switch to?)
- An op-amp is characterized by three important input/output attributes. What are they?
- What is an ideal op amp, and what approximations can we use?
