Assignment 7a: Simulate RF Chokes and DC Blocks (20 points)
Instructions
(Links to an external site.)1) Read about RF chokes and DC blocks in Module 7: Learning Materials
2) Here is the amplifier circuit we discussed in class
Here is the example done in ADS. Use a generic BJT, but turn the power down a lot (-30 dB worked for me). If you put in too much power (try it!) you will see the amplifier become nonlinear and give you some really weird values.
Identify which elements are RF blocks, DC blocks, what makes up the biasing network for the transistor, and which are the input and output matching circuits.
3) Simulate this circuit in ADS. Use the transient simulation, so you can see AC and DC signals separately.
4) Look at the voltages at all of the nodes in the circuit with the AC and DC blocks in place (the way the circuit is originally shown). Then, remove them, and see how the signals change.
5) Discuss your findings.
