Advice for students in the new era virtual recruiting
* Be proactive – the pandemic has slowed down hiring for many companies. That means that competition for openings will be tougher, so you need to search harder and work harder to land that great job you’re looking for!
* Virtual events will require more advance preparation – plan ahead!
* Register for Career Fairs<https://careers.utah.edu/career-days/ Links to an external site.> in advance – if you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to create an account in Handshake.
* You’ll also need to sign up for specific events during the Career Fair, e.g. group sessions or one-on-one sessions with employers. The sooner you do so, the better your options will be.
* You will likely need to register with and create profiles in other platforms for different employers. Do that in advance.
* For example, Sandia uses a platform called “Yello”. Click on one of our registration links to create a profile and upload your resume.
* If you don’t do this in advance, then your time with an employer may be entirely used creating a profile. Prepare in advance for best results.
* Unfortunately, you may need to do this multiple times for different employers.
* Registering with the employer’s platform likely won’t count as an application. You will almost certainly still need to apply on their website.
* Be sure to explore Handshake, Yello, and other platforms in advance to become familiar with them.
* Make sure to test audio and video on any platforms that will use them.
* Be patient with yourself and with recruiters – virtual recruiting is still somewhat new to us, and there will certainly be hiccups along the way. Expect technical difficulties.
Some amazing opportunities!
See the attachments for more information on:
* Incredible internships: Nonlinear Mechanics and Dynamics (NOMAD<http://www.sandia.gov/careers/students_postdocs/internships/institutes/nomad.html Links to an external site.>)
* There are many other amazing Institute Programs<http://www.sandia.gov/careers/students_postdocs/internships/institutes/index.html Links to an external site.> not represented in the flyers. These programs fill up quickly, so apply now!
There are many more exciting opportunities, and more are added on a continual basis. Search and apply at http://www.sandia.gov/careers Links to an external site.. Even if you talk to Sandia recruiters at any of our events, you will still need to search for and apply to positions on our website.
While our key needs are in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Cybersecurity, we have positions for most areas of engineering, hard sciences, and math, plus business and other areas. Internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Most full-time positions require a graduate degree. Most positions require U.S. Citizenship (except for some postdoctoral positions)
Sandia was named one of the Best Companies for Women<https://fairygodboss.com/best-companies-for-women Links to an external site.> on Fairygodboss! While most of our openings require US Citizenship, we encourage all candidates, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status (and we have a great program for veterans<http://www.sandia.gov/careers/special_programs/wounded_warrior_career_development_program.html Links to an external site.>).
