Qualitative Research | Quantitative Research |
---|---|
Inductive Approach | Deductive Approach |
Different grounding - about developing theory | Different grounding - about testing theories |
About answering complex questions | About testing a hypothesis |
Context is king | Research should be context free |
Unit of Analysis: Words | Unit of Analysis: Numbers |
Focus on rich description | Focus on measuring variables |
Theory can "emerge" from the data analysis | Theory is pre-known before collecting data |
More process-oriented (time intensive process) | More product-focused (faster to extract numerical findings) |

Research Design Strategies
- Matching the Research Design to the Research Questions or Problem comparing:
- exploratory
- explanatory
- descriptive
- predictive
- What type of question do you have? What do you really want to know? What is the problem you are trying to solve?
- To find a topic for research try concept mapping

- My research concept map
Download research concept map (created as I was researching) - it helped me narrow to boundary crossing and identity (all red lines end at identity!
- Figuring out what kind of data you will need to collect to answer your question.
- A case study (what is happening in one particular case or situation that is studied in context)
- Ethnography (embedding in a culture to study interactions)
- Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries (ERIAL) Project - description of an ethnography project with samples of research
- Action Research (qualitative research to improve practice)
- Phenomenology (rich description of an individual or group's experience of a phenomenon)
- Grounded Theory Research (creating a theory based on emerging themes and categories)
- Phenomenography (the different ways that people experience a phenomenon)
- A case study (what is happening in one particular case or situation that is studied in context)
- Who should be the study participants? How many participants will you need?
- What type of data will answer your questions?
- What will the scope of your study?
- Think about your design methodology as a cookbook (step-by-step how will you find study participants, contact the participants, what will you ask them, what data are important to your study questions, what will you need to do to collect data?)
- Use a 2-column observation table Download Use a 2-column observation table
- Use a template or rubric to observe
- Use a checklist or form to fill out
- Will you tape record?
- Will you just take notes?
- What questions will you ask?
- Will you videotape or audiotape the session?
- Will you have rules for participation in the group?
- Will you have a homogeneous or heterogeneous group?
- What questions will you ask?
- Will you use a likert-scale with comments?
- Is there just open ended questions?
- Will you collect demographic data?
- Will you need multiple videographers to capture the true event?
- Will you just audio tape?
- How will analyze the video - what are you trying to pull out of the video?
- Will you collect documents for analysis?
- How will you decide what documents to collect?
- How will store and save documents?
- Observation
- Interview
- Focus Group
- Survey
- VIdeotape
- Document Review
