What is an Honors Thesis?

Its purpose is to advance knowledge and understanding within the context of a research university and to further develop the student’s intellectual, professional and personal growth as a member of the Honors College. Thesis projects may take different forms in different majors – e.g. laboratory experiments, historical research or artistic creations, to name a few – but always demonstrate research expertise in the major field, a command of relevant scholarship and an effort to contribute to that scholarship.

Who Approves Honors Thesis Topics?
Each department defines the appropriate topics, parameters and standards of Honors thesis research. Topics might be developed out of faculty research, coursework, class projects, UROP projects, community engaged research or even internships. How long is an Honors Thesis?
There is no uniform required length for Honors theses, which vary widely across different fields and topics. However, a range of 30-40 pages is common. Honors Faculty Advisors Links to an external site. in each major and the Faculty Supervisor will set specific expectations.
When should I do my Honors Thesis?
Many students complete the Honors Thesis project during their senior year, but are welcome to do it any time before graduation. Most students spend more that a single semester working on their Honors Thesis project. The final semester (the one where students are typically enrolled in HSP, SOC, or FCS 4999) is often used to write and revise the final thesis document, while previous semesters are used to do the research and work with a faculty mentor in developing and implementing the project.
What does an Honors Thesis look like?
A completed thesis is a well-written, polished document that has been revised a number of times. The document will look different based on topic and methodology:
- About 30 pages, double spaced (this is an average; length varies)
- Includes a title page, an abstract, and table of contents page
- Uses Honors College template for formatting
- Adopts formal bibliographic reference style (your choice; APA (Links to an external site.) recommended)
