Module 7 Overview & Instructions

PRT 1220Buffer Solutions

Foreword

Midterm Exam 2 this week!  Although that's our focus, we'll also learn this week about buffer solutions.  No single idea about buffers is particularly difficult, but there are a lot of little details that will trip you up if you skimp on practice.  Just one assignment this week, and it's due on July 2, so if you're planning on a four-day weekend for July 4, get it done before then.

Questions and Answers

Whatever you're struggling with this week, somebody else in our section probably is struggling with it, too.  Post your question on the Module 7 Q&A Board.

If you know the answer to someone's question, post it.  It's almost a certainty that more people in our section than just the person who posted the question want to know the answer.

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

By the conclusion of this learning module, you should be able to:

  • calculate the pH of a polyprotic-acid solution by considering successive dissociations/ionizations.
  • calculate the pH of mixtures of strong acid/weak base and strong base/weak acid, especially through a limiting-reactant approach.
  • understand and use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for buffer calculations.
  • calculate the pH of a solution containing large amounts of a weak acid and its conjugate base.
  • write reactions for the reaction of buffer components with strong acid and strong base.
  • calculate the pH of a buffer solution after the addition of strong acid or strong base.
  • determine the capacity of a solution to absorb strong acid or strong base without large pH changes.
