Basic Overview of the Course Structure

Teaching with the Flipped Classroom is organized in three sets of modules:

  • Part 1: Building a Foundation for the Flip (modules 00-04)
  • Part 2: Planning the Flip (modules 05-10)
  • Part 3: Doing the Flip  (modules 11-15)

The pilot will focus on parts 1 and 2. Part 3 will be included in the first full offering of the course in Fall 2014.

Each individual module also has three components. These components model the way you will implement active learning and flipped classroom with your own students.

  • JUMP: Before you can even get up in the air and think about flipping, you need a strong foundation to leave the ground. The first component consists of online lectures or materials assignments that should be completed before the face-to-face (i.e. lecture time in the class you are teaching) or online sessions (i.e. in this class).

  • EXECUTE: This is where you implement your newest feat of teaching. In some weeks of this class, you will be completing material and interacting with your peers in this class, while in others, you will be implementing the new teaching styles you've learned with your own students.

  • STICK: Finish off cleanly and evaluate the process. In this class, every week, you will do a reflective wrap up related to the module activities in a journal, notebook or blog. As you progress, you will learn about assessment strategies to do this in the class you are in teaching so that you evaluate the activities you have implemented in class.
