Overview
Global warming is a significant threat to skiing and snow tourism, especially in the Northeast United States. New York has the most ski areas of any state (51) and is ranked 2nd behind California in the number of people who ski. Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine also contain a large number of ski areas and skiers. In addition to impacts on local economies, declining skiing in the northeast U.S. could reduce participation. After completing this learning activity, you will be able to describe some of the economic characteristics of the Northeast and the impacts of climate change.

Key Concepts
Recent studies provide guidance concerning the impact of climate change on ski areas in the Northeast, including a study by Daniel Scott and coauthors that is available here. Although you are welcome to read the entire study, the key information is presented in Tables 1 through 5. Focus on these tables for this learning activity. Although estimates of impacts on snow and skiing vary, the story is generally consistent with that which can be gleaned from this study.
